Abstract
Context: The university constitutes a demanding and competitive learning environment which can impact the well-being of students. The objective of this survey is to assess the burnout of students at the faculty of dentistry.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via an anonymous questionnaire with 3 sections: socio-demographic data, lifestyle and habit, and burnout through the Maslach burnout inventory-student survey (MBI-SS) . Continuous variables were presented as means and standard deviations, categorical variables as numbers and percentages. The variables were tested in univariate analysis to assess predictive factors related to burnout using the Khi-2 test. The significance level was set at p<0.05.
Results: Of the 694 registered students, 444 responses were collected. Of the participants, 65.1% were female, and the average age was 20.88 years ± 1.946. Additionally, 78.6% of students are satisfied with dental studies. The level of burnout is moderate, with an average emotional exhaustion score of 20.43, an average cynicism score of 11.48 and a moderate level of academic efficacy of 24.59. A significant association was found only between burnout and year of study.
Conclusion: Early detection of at-risk students and timely support helps fight against university student burnout.
